During the early 1990s, I coached cross country at Elston High School in Michigan City. Indiana. Sam Roule was on my team. My wife Rose taught Sam’s younger brother, Ben. Their parents (Bob and Sue) lived on Lake Shore Drive just down the block from us. We continue to see Bob walk his dog past our house most mornings. But we had not seen Sue in a long time, so are sorry to hear of her passing.
Sue Roule had been one of my “Go-To Moms.”
Let me explain. As coach I handled the training, telling the kids (both boys and girls on the team) what to run each day. But there were always other activities best handled by volunteers, like providing an extra car to drive to a practice area; like shopping for polka-dot sports bras so the girls looked like they just stepped off the cover of Vanity Fair; like planning an end-of-season awards party, which required picking a hall and hanging ribbons and balloons on spots where ribbons and balloons needed to be hung, a task best handled by one of the parents.
I or my assistant coach Mary Taylor would express a need and almost instantly the hand of one of the Moms would go up: “I can handle that.” That was what I called a “Go-To-Mom.” And Sue Roule served as Go-To Mom on many occasions, earning my eternal thanks. Glad to have known you, Sue.

Dear Bob, Sam and Ben and family. We are very saddened by Susan's passing. Our friendship goes back so many years..of golfing, playing bridge..lunching and being there for each other. It will be very difficult to imagine our life in Long Beach without our dear friend. You have our deepest sympathy, love and prayers. One of my fondest memories was after I got my new horse, Jake, and the four of you came to Michigan to go for a horseback ride with me. I think all had a great time! I feel blessed to have met you all. My deepest sympathies in your time of such loss. May God be with each of you!
