James A. "Cork" Emerich, 91, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Thursday, December 7, 2017 at 2:05 am in Life Care Center of Michigan City, Michigan City, Indiana.
There will be no visitation hours or services. Cremation will take place. Private family burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City, Indiana. Arrangements are being handled by the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, Indiana.
He was born May 4, 1926 in Santa Barbara, California to the late George Clifford and Mary Leona (Rogers) Emerich. On February 20, 1954 in Michigan City, Indiana he married Marjorie Schultz who survives Michigan City, Indiana. Also surviving is his daughter, Gail Emerich of Indianapolis, Indiana; son, James W. (Lorna) Emerich of Spokane, Washington. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Ruth Ryan, Rachel Myers and Betty Ann Gudeman along with three brothers, Harold Emerich, Allen Bosse and Gerald Emerich.
James grew up in Medaryville, Indiana, graduating from Medaryville High School and spent a brief period at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana. He loved sports and spent much of his adult life officiating high school basketball, baseball, football, continuing to officiate in many different recreational leagues in the LaPorte County area. He was a member of the Calumet Athletic Association and the IHSAA (Indiana High School Athletic Association). He retired from the Budd Co., Gary, Indiana as a lineman. After his retirement he enjoyed working as a referee evaluator for Notre Dame basketball and football. Another enjoyment was his coffee club group meeting on Saturday mornings at McDonald's on Franklin Street.
