Jane Susnis Obituary

Jane G. Susnis

November 30, 1925 - May 22, 2020

Jane G. Susnis, lifelong resident of Michigan City, IN, peacefully passed away on Friday, May 22, 2020, at 3:31 pm, at Trail Creek Place Assisted Living, Michigan City, IN. Services will be conducted at a later date and her final resting place will be at Greenwood Cemetery. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, IN, is handling the arrangements.

Jane was born November 30, 1925, at home in Michigan City, IN, to the late Otto and Esther (Ernst) Volksdorf. She married Alphonse (Al) Susnis on October 20, 1946, and he pre-deceased her in 1987.

She is survived by two loving daughters: Susan Ross, Englewood; FL; Sandra Stemmler, La Porte, IN; and her sister Nadine Warren, currently residing in Elkhart, IN, with Jane’s nephew Dana and his wife Nancy.

Jane worked at several Michigan City businesses including Hirsh Department Store, F.W. Woolworths, Welham Metal Products, Clark Equipment, and retired from the Indiana State Prison. After retirement, Jane took up painting as a hobby with instruction from various local artists. She is fondly remembered as a member of "Gert’s Girls" and a past president of the Michigan City Art League and the Area Artists Association of the J.G. Blank Center for the Arts plus a member of various other local area art associations. Jane’s artwork was purchased by many area businesses, including Purdue North Central. She was in a number of local art shows and exhibits and has two permanent displays at the Michigan City Old Lighthouse Museum in Washington Park: a painting of the Hutchinson Fountain and another of the Washington Park Zoo observation tower. Her favorite subjects to paint were the Michigan City lighthouse, the Park’s peristyle, local dunescapes and flowers.

Jane’s biggest regret was missing out on her high school graduation in 1943. She left school to work after her father passed away during her last semester of senior high. In 2018, her daughters were able to arrange for her to receive an honorary high school diploma from Michigan City Area School System at a ceremony with family and friends while residing at Trail Creek Place.

Her sense of humor, her kindness and her creative nature will be dearly missed by many in the community. She remains admired and loved by her daughters as she was a strong influence and role model in their lives.

Donations may be made in Jane’s behalf at any of the following organizations: AseraCare Hospice, 808 Vale Park Road, Valparaiso, IN 46383; Michigan City Art League, P.O. Box 2790, Michigan City, IN 46360; First United Methodist Church, 121 East 7th Street, Michigan City, IN, 46360; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
