Virginia was born September 22, 1945 in Michigan City, Indiana, to the late Walter and Geraldine (Gotto) Zahrn.   Surviving are two sons, Michael (Suzanne) Gowin of Lincoln, Illinois, Matthew (Kristina) Gowin of La Porte, Indiana; twelve grandchildren, Kieran, Grace Erin, Caitlin, Liam, Maura, Dylan, Aidan, Ryan, Eva, Evan, Emmett, and Elliott; two sisters, Kathy (Tom) Klawitter, and Diane (Bob) Swanson; four brothers, Ernie Zahrn, Will (Sandra) Zahrn, Don (Kimberly) Zahrn, and Jeff (Laura) Zahrn; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  She was preceded in death by son, Marc Gowin.

Known to many as Ginny, she graduated from Holy Cross School of Nursing in South Bend, Indiana, with a nursing certificate. Later she earned a BS in Nursing from the University of Saint Francis in Joliet, Illinois, and earned a master's degree in social work from Loyola University. She spent the first part of her career working as a nurse in intensive care, cardiac rehab, and other areas. After completing her MSW, she worked as a hospice counselor before spending several years on staff at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Illinois.

Ginny enjoyed every activity her sons and grandchildren were involved in from the arts to sports and everything in between. She was a fan of White Sox baseball and a fan of Loyola and Valparaiso University basketball. Ginny was an avid reader and member of various book clubs over the years. She listened to all kinds of music (classical, showtunes, oldies and country) and was a supporter of public television and NPR. Ginny enjoyed watching sports, home buying shows, Top Chef, NCIS (with Gibbs) and an all time favorite was West Wing. She grew flowers, tomatoes and strawberries. She was a gracious hostess, a good cook and her fruit salad was a potluck favorite.

Ginny made friends everywhere she went. She was quirky, fun, inviting, and helped others feel at ease.  She cared deeply for her family. Ginny was loved by many and will be dearly missed.
