Ronald J. Smith Sr., 65, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Monday, July 13, 2020 at 11:28 pm in Franciscan Health - Michigan City, Michigan City, Indiana.

A memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm, Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, IN with Rev. William F. O'Toole officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm -5:00 pm, Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel.

He was born August 10, 1954 in Michigan City, IN to Norman and Dorothea (Walker) Smith.

Surviving are his mother Dorothea Smith of Michigan City, IN; three sons, Ronald (Jamie) Smith Jr. of Portage, IN, David (Tonya) Smith of Mishawaka, IN, Bradley Smith of Mishawaka, IN; daughter, Kimberly Smith-Swan of Michigan City, IN; eight grandchildren, Aidan, Sean, Layla, Sarah, Ryan, Ann Marie, Laci, Liam; three brothers, Dale Smith of Michigan City, IN, Darrell (Trish) Smith of La Porte, IN, Daniel (Jackie) Smith of Michigan City, IN; sister, Rebecca (Earl) Wantland of Michigan City, IN; dear close friend, Nancy Smith of Michigan City, IN. He was preceded in death by his father Norman Smith.

Ronald worked for many years at Sullair in Michigan City and in construction as a home builder. In 2019 Ronald retired as a sergeant from the Indiana State Prison after 20 plus years of service. He was a graduate of Elston High School in Michigan City where he lettered in Football every year. He was a member of Queen of All Saints Catholic Church, Fish and Game Club, and a former member of FOP Dunes Lodge #75. Ronald was an avid Chicago Bears Football fan, enjoyed watching old western movies, and karaoke. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, pastoral care, and everyone involved in his care at Franciscan Health for the compassionate concern shown to Ron and his family. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
