Penelope Russell Obituary

Penelope "Penny"  Russell
April 14, 1947 - December 25, 2023

Penelope "Penny" Russell, 76, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Monday, December 25, 2023 at 1:53 pm in Franciscan Health - Michigan City.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at First Presbyterian Church, 121 W. 9th St., Michigan City, IN with Rev. Dr. Ericka Parkinson Kilbourne officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 am - 11:00 am, Wednesday at the church. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, IN is handling arrangements.

She was born April 14, 1947 in Cook, MN to the late Leon and Marie (Lewis) Polley. On December 30, 1973 in Cook, MN she married Tom Russell who survives in Michigan City, IN.

Also surviving are a daughter, Regan Russell of Cook, MN; son, Marc Russell of Cook, MN; brother, Tod Polley of Cook, MN; sister-in-law, Jane Polley of Columbia Heights, MN; and loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also preceded in death by her sister, Janie Polley; and brother, Denis Polley.

Penny retired as an educator for the Michigan City Area Schools. She was a member of and a Deacon at First Presbyterian Church, Michigan City, IN. Penny enjoyed attending church and playing Pinnacle.

Penny aka "Mz. Russell" taught kindergarten at Eastport and Mullen schools for 35 yrs. Teaching was her passion and with over 1,000 students which she called "her kids" her dedication to them was unwavering. If great things come in small packages, Penny was a testament to that. Those who knew her best could attest that she was a fiery, spunky little blonde who was always quick with the humor. Inside jokes with family and friends were her absolute favorite. You couldn't forget the twinkle in her eye and that grin when she was trying to keep a straight face after a zinger. Penny's love for her family and friends knew no bounds. If she wasn't busy at church, she could be found visiting numerous friends and family around Michigan City just checking to make sure that they didn't need anything or to just talk. In her free time, she loved to travel and could be found "back home" on Lake Vermilion for a good portion of the summer. The sun may shine a little differently to some now that this little supernova is radiating above.
