Paulette Marie Smiertelny, 79, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, November 3, 2023 at 9:08 a.m. in Franciscan Health - Michigan City, Indiana.

Private services will be held. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, IN is handling the arrangements.    

She was born on June 17, 1944 in Michigan City, Indiana to the late Joseph and Mary (Topa) Mecca. On August 19, 1962, in Corydon, Kentucky, she married Eugene F. Smiertelny, who survives in Michigan City.

Also surviving are her four children, Frank (Elyse) Smiertelny of Amesbury, MA, Danene (L.J.) Meeks of Truman, AR, Sean (Lisa) Smiertelny of Michigan City, IN, and John (Eileen) Smiertelny of La Porte, IN; three sisters, Gerry (Thomas) Marciniak of New Carlisle, IN, MaryEllen (Ed) Wedow of Hudson Lake Twnship, IN, and Norma (John) Ransom of Michigan City, IN; 13 grandchildren, Kenny, Kevin, Nicki (Justin), Trevor (Sarah), Shannon (J.P.), Jacob, Kayla, Roberto, Thalia, John, Kyleigh, Anna, and Isabella; bonus son, Matt (Donna) Nieman; best friend, Cookie Perez; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents; and two brothers, Daniel Mecca and John "Moon" Topa.

Paulette retired from customer service after working many years at The Marquette Mall, Michigan City. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, Michigan City. Paulette was a great wife and mother, whom will be greatly missed. She was a avid reader, talented at needle point, enjoyed watching and caring for the birds outside her home, and loved cooking for family. Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her family.
