Nicolaas (Nick) Johann Groenewegen
June 10, 1951 - December 24, 2025
Nicolaas (Nick) Johann Groenewegen passed away on December 24, 2025 surrounded by his family.
Born on June 10, 1951 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Nick was the son of the late Arthur Groenewegen and Ilse Janssen, and later made the United States his home. He is survived by his stepmother Annette Groenewegen. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 45 years, Lydia (Mora), four children and their spouses Christopher (Elena), Elise (Terry), Annette (Gabriel), and Michael, and a proud grandfather of Leandros and Kaija.
When he wasn’t reaching new heights in the banking industry where he worked for 30 years while living with his family in his homeland of the Netherlands -- by way of Germany, Canada, and the United States -- he volunteered in his communities as a chess and soccer coach, teaching children with his trademark humor and wisdom. One of his favorite pastimes was creating gardens that brought enjoyment to those around him. In Michigan City, you would find him volunteering in the book section of St. Stanislaus resale shop and enjoying the people he met there. He never sought the spotlight, and yet he always shined so bright.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a community garden or nonprofit that creates welcoming outdoor spaces for others to enjoy.
Per Nick’s wishes - at a future date, the family will plan a memorial event to celebrate his remarkable life. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, IN is handling the arrangements
