February 22, 1941 - September 23, 2021 


Martin Boyd Hayes, 80, entered into Heaven in the evening of September 23, 2021. Martin was born February 22, 1941 to Lee and Mary Louise Hayes in East Chicago, Indiana. Martin was a proud graduate of East Chicago Washington High School. He enlisted in the Air Force to fight in the Vietnam War. While he was stationed in England, he met Riitta Junes. They married in 1967 and relocated to the United States. He was a real estate broker in Northwest Indiana and Illinois. He was the proud owner of Hayes Realty in Michigan City, Indiana and Quepos, Costa Rica. Martin was also a certified public accountant. Following his real estate and CPA career, he relocated to Michigan City, Indiana where he began work at the Indiana State Prison as a Correctional Officer. 
 
Martin was a hard working father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. He is welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven by parents, his brothers, Gerald and Ronald Hayes and his sisters Gloria Purnell, Yvonne Johnson and Mary Parker. Martin is mourned by his sisters: LaVoyd (Roy) Summerville, Patricia (Richard) Brown, Teresa (Robert - Deceased) Samuel, and Carolyn (Charles Dunomes) Smith. Martin’s legacy continues through his four sons: Michael (Jennifer) of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Erik (Carmen) of Lenexa, Kansas, Petri (Emily) of Port Saint Lucie, Florida, and Gerald of Michigan City, Indiana. He is also survived by his nine amazing grandchildren: Michael (29), Kaitlyn (25), Candace (24), Kai (23), Kelsey (22), Kiira (15), Hope (8), Caleb (5) and Mercy (4), and one great grandchild Kya Kay (1).
 
Martin was a devote Catholic and member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church. He also served as the Past Charter Grand Knight of Bishop Andrew G. Grutka Council of Gary, Indiana, Former District Deputy of Abraham Lincoln Knights of Columbus, Assistant Color Commander of Abraham Lincoln Assembly, Lector, Commentator, Apostolate of the Laity Leader Race Council Against Bigotry of N.W. Indiana, Dunes Coalition Against Death Penalty (Pro-Life), Board of Directors of Michigan City Senior Center, and United States Air Force Veteran. He was very proud to have traveled to 20 countries throughout his life.

Martin’s celebration ceremony is scheduled for Friday October 1, 2021 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church located at 1506 Washington Street, Michigan City, Indiana. An open casket viewing will be held between 9-11 am. A Catholic Mass Funeral Ceremony will commence immediately following at 11-12:30 pm. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, Indiana is handling arrangements.
