Maria I (Sandoval) Alvarez

Maria I (Sandoval) Alvarez, 98, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Saturday December 12, 2020.
Maria was born on July 31, 1922 in Dolores Hidalgo, Mexico, to the late Juan Sandoval and Ssundian Mendiola. On April 22, 1938 she married Jose C. Alvarez who preceded her in death on June 29, 2012.
She was also preceded in death by son Marcial Alvarez, and daughter, Mary R. Alvarez; son-in-law, Perry C. Kajer; grandson, Brandon S. Alvarez Davis; and a great-grandson, Andrew L.T. Edson.
Surviving are her children, Rosa (Bruce) Alvarez Criswell of Michigan City, IN, Rod (Wendy) Alvarez of Broken Arrow, OK, Cecilia Alvarez Kajer of Michigan City, IN, Joe (Janet) Alvarez of Michigan City, IN, Marie (Gil Martin) Alvarez of Osceola, IN, Victoria Alvarez of San Antonio, TX, Cleta (Jesse) Alvarez Sturm of Broken Arrow, OK, Lidia (Lee) Alvarez of Michigan City, IN, Jesse (Cynthia) Alvarez of Carrollton, TX Michael (Diana)Alvarez of Mount Prospect, IL, Janie (Virel) Alvarez Duncan of Walkerton, IN and Valerie (Neal) Alvarez Brady of LaPorte, IN. Also surviving are grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grand children.
One of Maria’s proudest moments was when she became a US citizen. She was a homemaker, she loved to garden, and crochet afghans and doilies. She absolutely loved family get togethers where she would reminisce over treasured moments with her children and grandchildren. Her real passion was cooking for her family (especially tortillas and tamales) . One thing she would always do before you left her was make a cross over your body and say “Dios te bendiga” (God Bless You).
The family would like to thank her doctors, all the employees of Brightstar Home Care of Valparaiso, and Dunes Hospice. A special thank you to Joy and Jessica of Dunes Hospice for all their hard work, love, and compassion they gave to our mom Maria.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am Friday, December 18, 2020 at Queen of All Saints Catholic Church, 606 So. Woodland Ave. Private entombment will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery Mausoleum.
Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 7:00pm Thursday at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, IN and 9:00 am to 10:00 am Friday at Queen of All Saints Catholic Church. The Rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. Thursday in the funeral chapel.
