Lawrence Mazur Obituary

Lawrence J. Mazur
May 17, 1948 - August 10, 2025

Lawrence J. Mazur of The Villages, Florida, formerly of LaPorte, Indiana, passed away Sunday, August 10, 2025, in UF Health Spanish Plaines Hospital, The Villages, Florida.

Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, September 6, 2025 at 11:00 AM (CST) in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 201 Bach St, LaPorte, Indiana, with burial to follow in Pine Lake Cemetery with full Marine Corps military honors. Visitation will be Friday, September 5, 2025  from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM (CST) at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St, Michigan City, Indiana.

Lawrence was born on May 17, 1948, in LaPorte, Indiana, to the late Chester S. Mazur and Marie J. Mazur (Ziarnek). On October 17, 1981, in LaPorte, Indiana, he married Laura Alban, who survives along with his son, Lawrence Joseph (Stephanie) Mazur, II, of West Lafayette, Indiana; two daughters, Lauren A. (Aaron) Stitzel of Melbourne, Florida, and Lindsey A. Mazur of Chicago, Illinois; five fine grandchildren: Isabelle Mazur, Eleanor Mazur, Benjamin Mazur, Adeline Mazur, and Anson Stitzel; his brother, Justin (Gerry) Mazur; his sister, Donna (Larry) Norris; and countless nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews, too numerous to name. He was preceded in death by brothers Eugene (Cindy) Mazur and Jerry (Kathy) Mazur.

Larry was a graduate of Indiana University (BS in Accounting/CPA), John Marshall Law School (JD), DePaul University Law School (LLM), and University of Wisconsin at Madison Graduate School of Banking (CTFA). He served the country as a combat Marine and Vietnamese interpreter and was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps in 1968. Mr. Mazur lectured on business, law, accounting, real estate, and taxation, for Purdue North Central, Indiana University South Bend, and Ball State University (WC) as one of the longest tenured part-time lecturers in undergraduate and continuing education (CE/CPE/CLE). After more than 20 years in Trust and Investment Management and Leadership of LaPorte County, he practiced Law, Investment Management, and continued to write, research, and provide wealth advice to clients, friends, and family for the remainder of his life.

An active member of the Secret Heart Church from baptism, he served as a Knight of the Altar, a seminarian (Holy Cross Wisconsin), and was a member of the Holy Name Society, church council member and lectern. He served on the Rotary Club, Big Brother, and was an exchange student sponsor, board member for the Salvation Army, and Ace for the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) and SBA. Mazur was a member of both the Indiana and LaPorte County Bar Associations and CPA Societies. Corporal Mazur was a lifetime member of both the Michiana Marines Detachment 1380 and Vietnam Veterans, Inc. of LaPorte County. He was Incorporator and President of LaPorte Area Lake Association and board member and Chairman for the Pine Lake Conservancy District, while living on the Island with his wife Laura for over 40 years. He quenched an insatiable appetite for landscaping and Pine Lake leisure alongside good neighbors and friends of the LaPorte community.

Uncle Lar’s constant spiritual family mantra: “God’s greatest gift of love was given to us in the form of family; it is our only, shortest, and most precious taste of heaven on earth,” resonates in the hearts of his loved ones, along with his constant family poker game mantra for both young and old: “Remember! It is only the temporary redistribution of family wealth,” where he so willingly and humorously enjoyed to lose.

Contributions may be made to Holy Family Parish, Sacred Heart Church, 201 Bach St, LaPorte, Indiana, 46350, or to the Holy Name Society for scholarship.
