John S. Murphy
December 16, 1941 - May 19, 2024 

John Murphy, age 82 of LaPorte, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, May 19, 2024 at Franciscan Health in Michigan City.
  
John was born on Dec. 16, 1941 to John and Verna (Kellogg) Murphy, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Darlene Murphy, children Theresa Werner of LaPorte, Kathleen Bair of Michigan City, grandchildren Karl (Audra) Bair of Michigan City and Marie (Nick) McIntosh of LaPorte, great grandson Nicholas McIntosh, his sisters Cindy Vanderstarr of Cadillac, Michigan, Lisa Vanderstarr of Scottsville, Michigan, and many nieces and nephews.
   
He was also preceded in death by his brother Craig Murphy, sister Myrna Mokrycki, Marilyn Hutchison, and Sherry Bishop.
   
John graduated from Elston High School in 1960. John retired from Nipsco after 29 years at Bailly Generating Station and four years at Hammond Dispatch Center.  During his years of retirement, he also worked at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel and NAPA Auto Parts.  He was dedicated to his church where he was a former usher, sang on the 9:30 choir as well as the consolation choir, and volunteered for many committees. He was a lifetime member of St. Joseph's Young Men's Society and a member of the Michigan City Senior Center. He and wife Darlene loved to polka and do the jitterbug. He loved his family and was always there for them. They would call on Dad, Grandpa, or JaJa, as he was lovingly called, to fix most anything and everything. He loved his John Wayne Westerns as well as working in his yard which was always immaculate.
 
 Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, May 24, 2024 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 1506 Washington Street, Michigan City, IN with  Rev. Walter Ciesla officiating. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Michigan City, Indiana.  Visitation will be from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm, Thursday and from 8:30 am - 9:30 am Friday, May 24, 2024 at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel. The St. Joseph Young Men's Society will recite the Rosary at 5:00 pm Thursday in the funeral chapel.
