Joan Rosalie Mary (Sabol) Langley

Joan S. Langley
December 27, 1935 - October 16, 2021 

Joan Rosalie Mary Sabol Langley, the woman we called “Mz Tess”, “Pope Joan”, and “Grammy”,
died after 85 wonderful years on October 16. She would like you to know her work here is
done. The Lord called her to Him, and as always, she was ready to go where He led.
Joan was born to John and Theresa Sabol in Bethlehem PA, sister to Connie and Rick, in 1935.
She first emerged as a gifted student, graduating Moravian College in ’56, salutatorian and
summa cum laude.
She fell hard and fast for Dave Langley, the beautiful Irishman appearing with a friend on her
doorstep when she was 17. She became a wife at 19 and loved him every day until his death 53
years later. She became a mother at 20 and a matriarch of 3 generations: 5 children, 13
grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren to date.
She found her tribe in the Long Beach and Notre Dame Parish community she served as
neighbor and friend for 53 years. You saw her marketing DC Langley watercolors at summer art
shows, planting flowers at the town center with her garden club, serving as lector and cantor at
ND masses, and singing with the Northern Indiana Symphony Orchestra Chorus (Carnegie Hall
on Valentine’s Day!). She was always singing…
For all of us, she was the consummate teacher - whether it was her classroom at La Lumiere,
scripture study at Notre Dame or her living room whenever 2 or more gathered. Her legacy is
every challenging lesson and healing insight we conjure now, which she offered to develop our
whole self. We wish her what she always wished us, “a peace that surpasses all understanding.”

Joan’s Mass of Resurrection will be held on 10:00 am Friday, October 22nd at Notre Dame Church, 1010 Moore Road, Long Beach, Indiana.  Instead of a
viewing, there will an opportunity to gather and greet each other from 9am in the vestibule before the mass begins at 10am. 
Arrangements are being handled by the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, Indiana.
