Joan Margaret Helms, 91, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 25, 2023 at 12:05 p.m. in Franciscan Health , Michigan City, Indiana.

Private family service and entombment to join her husband will be held at the Chapel of Chimes in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

She was born on April 23, 1932, in Palatine, Illinois, to the late Walter F. and Katharyn (Kolbiaz) Wintek. On May 17, 1952, in La Porte, Indiana, she married Robert A. Helms, who preceded her in death.

Surviving are one daughter, Beth (Bruce) Helms Parker of La Porte, Indiana; one son, Todd Helms of Honduras, Central America; and one granddaughter, Jessica (Nicholas Rehlander) Parker of Indianapolis, Indiana. Also preceding her in death were one sister, Evelyn Lind; and two brothers, James and John Wintek.

Joan graduated from La Porte High School in 1950. She spent most of her life caring for her home, family, and pets. When her children were older, Joan worked for the La Porte County Public Library in the Coolspring branch for 12 years. She was a avid reader so she truly enjoyed this job. Joan was a member of the La Porte Historical Society, Pioneer Land, Swanson Activity Center, and St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She loved animals, music (piano), needlework, traveling, and her granddaughter.
