He was born on August 24, 1972, in Michigan City, Indiana, to Gary and Kathleen (Spence) Sonnenberg. On August 22, 2020 in Michigan City, Indiana, he married Donya Robin (Perkins) Sonnenberg, who survives in Michigan City, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gary Sonnenberg.
David formerly was a training officer at Westville Correctional Facility and currently worked in maintenance at the Michigan City Police Department. He enjoyed camping on the weekends with family and friends. David was a Bears fan, even though his wife rooted for the Packers. David was an avid member of the DAV and considered many people from there as part of his family. David leaves behind many friends that he considered family. He deeply loved his family, and he will be missed by them dearly.
A celebration of life will be held at the DAV at 2301 Ohio Street in Michigan City immediately after the service Wednesday at funeral chapel. As David found joy in life and doing things he loved to do, the family asks that you do the same and go out and do something that brings you real joy and share it with those around you.
