Carl F. Westman

Carl F. Westman, 95, of Michigan City passed away on May 21, 2021. He is survived by his wife of 33 years Thelma (Kutch). Carl was preceded in death by Betty (Schwanke), his first love, his first wife and mother of his children. loving and caring father of Richard Wayne (Kathleen) of Elburn, IL, Gary Lee (Suzanne) of Michigan City, Terry James of Michigan City and Ronald Craig (Geraldine) of Mustang, OK. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Carl was born in Michigan City on March 13, 1926 to Frederick and Edith (Haley). He attended Elston Senior High School where he played on the high school basketball team, met Betty Schwanke and graduated in May of 1944.
After graduation Carl was inducted into the US Army on July 24, 1944. After completing training in Texas he was assigned to Company A, 59th Armored Infantry Battalion, 13th Armored Division for training in California. After a short leave at home, he departed for Europe arriving at Le Harve, France on January 29, 1945. With his unit he saw action in France, Germany and Austria. At the end of the war in Europe, Carl and his unit returned to the United States and were stationed in Idaho until the end of the war.
Returning home, Carl married, started a family and began a long and successful career at Blocksom & Co. in Michigan City. Carl was a long time member of Pottawattomie Country Club and enjoyed golfing and dining at the club. Golf and lunch or drinks after with his friends always brought great pleasure.
Carl was also an accomplished bowler and an avid sports fan - particularly of the Chicago Cubs. And for several years Carl followed the Michigan City Red Devils basketball team with season tickets every year for home games and attending most road games as well.
He was a good father to his four sons, a good friend and a good man. He will be missed by many.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, May 27, 2021 at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, IN. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 am - 11:00 am, Thursday at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel.
