Virginia L. Papunen, 97, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2018 at Trail Creek Place, Michigan City, IN.

A celebration of life will be conducted at a later date. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, IN is handling arrangements.

She was born April 10, 1920, in Lancaster, Ohio. On November 19, 1945, she married Walter E. Papunen who preceded her in death on November 19, 1994. They were married for 49 years. They moved to Long Beach in 1965.

Surviving are her daughter, Ellen C. (John) Dwyer of Michigan City, IN.; son, Eric Papunen of California; five grandchildren, Mathew Papunen, Cory Coelho, Maxwell Hytken, Ava Papunen and Ilsa Papunen; and five great-grandchildren.

She graduated from the Henry Ford Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit, MI. She was the director of nursing at Red Oaks Nursing Home for 12 years. Virginia "Ginny" loved boating on Lake Michigan and traveling the world. She was an active member of PEO Chapter BA for 50 years; First United Methodist Church, where she was a long time volunteer in the soup kitchen; and the Mary Martha Circle.
