Mathew W. Shawala, 92, Laporte, Indiana, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2019 at 8:45 am Settlers Place, La Porte, Indiana.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, July 5, 2019 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 1506 Washington Street, Michigan City, Indiana with Rev. Walter Ciesla officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Lake Cemetery, Laporte, Indiana. There will be no visitation hours. Arrangements are being handled by the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, Indiana.
He was born February 9, 1927 in Springfield Twp., La Porte County, Indiana to the late Matthew and Romalda (Szczeblowski) Shawala. On June 22, 1959 in La Porte, Indiana he married Josephine Galko, who preceded him on January 28, 1979. Surviving are sister, Helen Heck of Lawrenceville, Georgia; nieces, Kay (Robert) Pawlik, Sandra Poindexter, Candace Wolfe and Bonnie Ferri; nephews, Dennis McGrath, George Krueger and James Krueger; He was preceded in death by niece, Patricia Robinson; nephews, Robert McGrath and Donald Krueger; brother, Steven Shawala along with three sisters, Jean McGrath, Phyllis Krueger and Josephine Shawala;
Mat graduated from Springfield Center High School in 1945 and worked in shipping and as a forklift driver retiring after 21 years from Wirekraft, Rolling Prairie, Indiana. He was a life member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Michigan City, Indiana, served in the US Army during the Korean War receiving the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He also was a former member of the DAV #26, La Porte, Indiana. Our uncle has been truly a blessing showing his kindness, caring and gentleness to all of us. We would also like to thank Settlers Place, especially Dayna, Christi, and Cheryl for their care & love to him and also to Vicki & Heather from Dunes Hospice for their kindness, care and comfort.
