John E. Topa, 88, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Thursday, March 28, 2019 at 2:10 am in his home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, April 6, 2019 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Buffalo & 10th Streets, Michigan City, Indiana with Rev. William O'Toole officiating and the American Legion Skwiat Post 451 and the V.F.W. 2536 conducting full military services. Private burial will take place in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Friday and from 8:30 am - 9:30 am Saturday, April 6, 2019 at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, IN. The American Legion Skwiat 451 and the V.F.W. 2536 will conduct a memorial service at 6:00 pm followed by a wake service at 6:30 pm, both Friday in the funeral chapel.

He was born May 17, 1930 in Otis, Indiana. On June 29, 1957 in Michigan City, IN he married Norma Kieffer who preceded him September 2, 2000.

Surviving are four daughters, Joyce Topa of Michigan City, IN, Annette Topa of Salisbury, NC, Sharon (Mark, Sr.) McDaniel of Trail Creek, IN and Linda (Dennis) Williams of LaPorte, IN; son, Timothy (Susan) Topa of Sebring, FL;15 grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by one grandson.

John retired after 37 years as a construction supervisor at NIPSCO and was a S.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Joseph Young Men's Society, American Legion Skwiat Post 451, V.F.W. 2536, D.A.V. Chapter 23, I.B.E.W. in Indianapolis, IN as well as the Honor Guard for American Legion Skwiat Post 451 and V.F.W. 2536. John enjoyed reading, gardening, fishing, polka music and was an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan.
