May 10, 1927 - April 9, 2018

Rev. Charles E. Doyle, J.D., 90, Hammond, Indiana, passed away Monday, April 9, 2018 at 4:25 am in the Albertine Home, Hammond, IN.

Morning Prayers will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at St. Ann of the Dunes Catholic Church, 433 East Golfwood Road, Beverly Shores, IN followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am with Bishop Donald Hying celebrating Mass. Private burial will take place in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN. Receiving of Rev. Doyle into church will be held at 2:00 pm Monday at St. Ann on the Dunes Catholic Church. with visitation following until 8:00 pm. Evening Prayer will take place at 7:30 pm Monday in the church. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, IN is handling arrangements.

He was born May 10, 1927 in Nappanee, Indiana to the late Thomas C. and Ruth M. (Serin) Doyle.

Surviving are his brother, Thomas (Sandra) Doyle of South Bend, IN; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his three brothers, John, Patrick and Richard Doyle.

Father Doyle attended Nappanee Elementary School and graduated from James Witcomb Riley High School, South Bend, IN. He received his Liberal Arts Degree from St. Meinrad College, Masters Degree in Education from Loyal University and his Doctors Degree in Law from Valparaiso University. He was ordained as a Priest on May 1, 1953. His pastoral assignments included Associate Pastor of St. Mary's, East Chicago, IN, Sacred Heart, Whiting, IN, St. Emeric, Gary, IN and Pastor of St. Ann of the Dunes, Beverly Shores, IN from 1969 until his retirement in 1996. Father Doyle's particular assignments included: Teacher at Bishop Noll Institute; Chaplain at Beatty Memorial Hospital, Westville, IN; Gary Mayor Richard Hatcher's Committee for National Education Grant for training young African Americans; Martin Luther King, Jr. civil rights march in Montgomery, AL in 1965; Chaplain of Indiana State Prison; Founder and Chair of the Duneland Coalition for the abolishment of the death penalty; Attorney for the Michigan City Human Rights Commission; Public Defender for LaPorte County, IN; Appointed to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission by President Jimmy Carter; and Indiana Chair for CURE ( Citizens United for Rehabilitation of Errant's). His awards included; Boy Scout of America Eagle Scout Award; The Sagamore of the Wabash Award; St. Meinrad Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award; and the LaPorte County, IN Lawyers Association Humanitarian of the Year Award.
