Lorraine A. Wachowski, 89, of Michigan City, who served in City Hall as secretary for two former mayors, passed away Sunday, May 22, 2016 at 7:10 pm in Franciscan St. Anthony Health - Michigan City, IN.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, May 26, 2016 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 1506 Washington Street, Michigan City, IN with Rev. Walter Ciesla officiating. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Michigan City, IN. Visitation will be from 8:45 a.m. -9:30 a.m., Thursday, May 26, 2016 at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, IN. The St. Stanislaus Rosary Sodality will recite the Rosary at 9:15 a.m. at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel. 

Mrs. Wachowski, who served under mayors Clifford Arnold and Joseph LaRocco, died after a brief hospitalization.

A lifelong Michigan City resident, Mrs. Wachowski was born Sept. 11, 1926, and was the youngest and last surviving sibling among the eight children of Frank and Mary (Kokoszynski) Kaiser. On Oct. 4, 1952, she married U.S. Navy veteran Edward Wachowski, who preceded her June 13, 1978.

Her employers over the course of her life included Hirsch's Department Store and Blocksom. Later, she became active in Michigan City politics. She was a longtime election poll worker, and served on election campaigns for several Democratic mayoral and City Council candidates. A member of the Michigan City chapter of the LaPorte County Women's Democratic Club and the LaPorte County League of Women Voters, Mrs. Wachowski retired from City Hall in 1990.

Mrs. Wachowski also enjoyed a variety of other interests including an abiding love for dogs, particularly her late, beloved poodle, Popcorn. A member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, she was active in church groups and organizations including the church choir, the St. Stan's Rosary Sodality and the St. Stan's Young and Heart Club. She also belonged to the Fraternal Order Women of the Moose Club.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Wachowski was preceded by her brother, Norman Kaiser, and six sisters: Helen Kaiser, Theresa Przybylinski, Sally Topolski, Edna Wojasinski, Irene Sadlowski and Norette Saturday; as well as nieces and nephews. Her close friend and companion, Roger McKee, also preceded her, in 2006.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews and their children; her longtime friend and caregiver, Beth Pishkur; and her best friend, Carol Wallen.
