Ernest F. Heberling, 88, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at 5:20 am in Aperion Care Arbors at Michigan City.

The St. Joseph Masonic Lodge #45 F&AM will conduct services at 5:00 pm, Monday, July 24, 2017 at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, IN. Private burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm until service time Monday at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel.

He was born March 10, 1929 in Michigan City, Indiana to the late Ernest and Edna (Stolde) Heberling. On October 3, 1953 in Michigan City, IN he married Beverly "Bev" Stevenson who survives in Michigan City, IN.

Also surviving are a daughter, Debra (Brian O'Connor) Heberling of Chicago, IL; son, Michael (Sheryl) Heberling of Mishawaka, IN; two grandchildren, Ashley and Samantha Heberling, both of Mishawaka, IN; and his great-grandchild, Collin Heberling.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Dorothea Smith; and step-brother, Harold Adams.

He graduated from Isaac C. Elston High School in 1947 where he was involved in many sports. and attended Western Michigan University and Valparaiso University. He served in the U.S Army in New Jersey and Germany from 1951 to 1953 and played football for the Heidlberg Lions while in the service.

Ernest was employed at Indiana Bell Telephone Co., Ameritech and AT&T and retired in 1987 after 35 years. He retired to Vero Beach, FL and then moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL but also was a Michigan City snowbird.

He was a life member of Elks Lodge #432, Michigan City, IN and a member of the Moose Family Center 980, City and Telephone Pioneers of America, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of South Bend, St. Joseph Masonic Lodge #45 F&AM of South Bend, IN, 76er's golf league, Michigan City Senior Center and the V.F.W. #2536. He was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

He enjoyed fishing (especially perch), golfing, reading mystery books, Perry Mason, and playing Euchre and Pinochle with friends.
