Donald Schwermer, 88,  Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Sunday, August 23, 2015 at 1:00 pm in Life Care Center of Michigan City, Michigan City, IN.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, IN with Dr. Rev. Gwendolyn Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery with full military services conducted by the V.F.W. 2536 and the American Legion Skwiat Post 451. Visitation will be from 12:00 pm -1:00 pm, Wednesday at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, IN.

He was born September 15, 1926 in Michigan City, Indiana to the late Gustave and Zelma (Fechner) Schwermer. On December 10, 1949 in Michigan City, IN he married Audrey Schultz who survives in Michigan City, IN.

Also surviving are three daughters, Janet (Patrick) Stanaszek of LaPorte, IN, Sandra (Matthew) Henry of LaPorte, IN and Jill (Michael) Nygren of Michigan City, IN; son, Michael Schwermer of Michigan City, IN; seven grandchildren, Matthew Henry, Zachary Stanaszek, Michael (Gina) Henry, Ellen Henry, Erin Schwermer, Alex Nygren and Bradley Nygren; four great-grandchildren, Jack Henry, Max Henry, Luke Henry and Nolan Boller; and two sisters, Dorothy Gardner and Alice Kroening both of Michigan City, IN.

He was also preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Hammer.

Donald was a retired fire fighter for the Michigan City Fire Department and a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. He was a member of the V.F.W. 2536, John Franklin Miller American Legion Post 37, and the Fire-Fighters Union Local 475 in which he held many positions. Donald enjoyed bowling, baseball, softball and coached the 1955 American Legion Junior Baseball State Championship team.
