A Special Olympian all his life, Brock David Surface completed his race of life, crossing his finish line triumphant on Friday afternoon, Aug. 18, 2017. He was 30 years old.

Brock was born in Michigan City, IN on May 15, 1987, to Deborah (Whitson) and David Surface.

Facing multiple medical issues, a few of which challenged him his whole life, Brock was nonetheless best known for his always bright outlook that cheered everyone he met. He loved giving hugs and was great at giving them. He loved to help anyone who needed help.

Brock participated in Special Olympics from age 8 on. He achieved medals in track and field, bowling, basketball and swimming. Brock was a member of Boy Scout Troop 871. For years he helped his mother with the archery station at Cub Scout Camp. He had an extensive and eclectic CD music collection, and he loved completing word search puzzles. He would spend hours taking mechanical things apart, from wrist watches to a telephone. He also loved weaving pot holders.

Brock may have most enjoyed camping with his family. The campfire was his favorite part. He had a fabulous sense of humor and he was an engaging, if unrelenting storyteller.

He attended school at Edgewood, Mullen, and Joy elementary schools, Barker Middle School, Michigan City Junior High and graduated from Michigan City High School in 2005. He worked as a loader at Lowe's and as a handyman at Barker Woods Enrichment Center.

Brock’s family was everything to him. In addition to his parents, Brock is survived by his two brothers, Brent (Heidi Merkel) Surface, two nephews Luke and Liam of Nashville, IN, and Blake (Samantha Krcelich) Surface, of Indianapolis, and by his grandmother June Whitson, of Westland, MI.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Frank and Mary Ellen (Church) Kearcher, and William R. Whitson.

Services will be at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday and 10 to 11 a.m. Friday. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. in the Chapel, officiated by Pastor William R. Barnes of Michigan City Faith City Assembly of God.
